Master of Science in Law Program Overview

The Master of Science in Law (MSL) degree at Champlain College introduces professionals in manufacturing, sales, human resources, health, and other areas to the legal system and its many intersections with their profession. It is a comprehensive program covering a wide range of issues that will help you understand and deal with the intricate legalities that arise in your field of business.

The MSL courses were carefully selected to include the most important aspects of the law. Expand your knowledge and become empowered in the law. This program will equip you with expertise in the areas of legal language and analysis, contracts, information privacy, litigation, constitutional issues, regulatory law, liability, and alternative dispute resolution. Students learn to find and interpret the laws that affect their activities, identify and handle situations with legal implications, and keep legal problems from escalating.

The broad focus provides a stronger foundation despite your current profession. By understanding various aspects of the law, new dimensions of opportunities will open up for your career. Diversify your portfolio of understanding with this all-inclusive MSL and learn to navigate the law with confidence. This distinct degree will help you become an objective thinker and equip you with the tools you need to appraise and evaluate legal situations.

In addition, the MSL has special value for foreign attorneys and foreign business executives preparing themselves to work effectively with the American legal system and for paralegals who want additional training and an advanced degree.

This program does not prepare its graduates to practice law, but to use legal understanding in other professions and in their lives as citizens. Its credits are not transferable to a J.D. program.

The MSL program is structured as follows:
  • Six start dates per year—two per semester in spring, summer, and fall
  • Fourteen three-credit courses for a total of forty-two credits
  • Residency Course within the first 6 months of entering the program
  • The program can be completed in approximately two and a half years
  • A small group of students move through the program with you
  • Online, asynchronous activities include discussions, papers, projects, reports, case studies, and workplace-oriented assignments
